Today at 10 a.m. EDT, the U.S. Supreme Court will hold oral arguments in Merrill v. Milligan, a landmark case about redistricting in Alabama that could severely weaken Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), which protects voters from discrimination in district maps and voting laws. In 2021, Alabama drew a congressional map with only one district where Black voters could elect the candidate of their choice. Earlier this year, a federal court struck down the map after finding it diluted the voting strength of Black Alabamians. But Alabama appealed this decision to the Supreme Court, and now the Court has the opportunity to revisit Section 2 and could render it powerless in protecting minority voters from discriminatory maps.
