ICYMI: Abbott / O’Rourke Debate 

• In the first and only scheduled debate in the Texas gubernatorial race, Gov. Greg Abbott and challenger Robert “Beto” O’Rourke sparred over several of the hot-button issues driving the race.
      
• The tone of the debate was muted: Abbott was going through the motions, and O’Rourke was clearly resigned to his coming loss.
       
• Brandon Waltens breaks out a few key points from the hour-long Friday night debate that covered border security, gun issues, and abortion.
      
• Notably, Abbott gave full support for eliminating school property taxes. “My goal is to eliminate the school property taxes imposed in the state of Texas so that people can genuinely own their own home without being taxed out of it,” said Abbott, pointing toward the state’s $27 billion surplus.

Pro-Family Groups Condemn Comptroller Hegar

• As establishments across Texas continue hosting “all-ages” drag shows targeting children, grassroots organizations Texas Family Project and the American Principles Project condemned Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar for not pursuing an investigation into Dallas gay bar Mr. Misster. Katy Drollinger has the story.

       
• Earlier this year in June, the venue hosted a “Drag the Kids to Pride” event, where scantily clad men dressed as women danced suggestively in front of children. One video from the event showcased children handing drag queens dollar bills and walking onstage in front of a neon sign reading, “It’s not gonna lick itself!”
       

• According to Chapter 102 of the Texas Business Code, if classified as sexually oriented businesses, these establishments would have to pay a $5 fee per patron and could not allow people under the age of 18 to attend their events.

           

• Hegar’s office has yet to conclude the investigation or take action against the Dallas gay bar, leading Texas Family Project President Chris Hopper and American Principles Project President Terry Shilling to condemn Hegar for “dragging his feet.”

School District Policy Threatens Girls’ Safety

• Round Rock ISD in Central Texas has held a “shadow” policy allowing so-called “transgender” students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of the opposite gender on what the school describes is a case-by-case basis – and without parental knowledge. Soli Rice reports the district’s board of trustees is refusing to let parents even address the issue. 

Montgomery: A&M’s Pro-Choice Advocacy Despicable

• Faith Montgomery is a pro-life engineering major at Texas A&M. In a new commentary, she expresses her disappointment with the university’s promotion of pro-abortion messages but explains why there is reason to be hopeful.
