If anti-democracy candidates like Doug Mastriano (PA), Kari Lake (AZ), and others had been in power in 2020, it’s very possible that Donald Trump would have succeeded in overturning the election and remaining in power. But it’s not just anti-democracy governors who pose a threat in 2024 — gerrymandered legislatures could try to overturn legitimate election results, too:

At the NDRC, everything we’re doing right now is aimed at preventing that from happening. From fighting back against GOP voter suppression to supporting over 400 Democracy Defenders in 17 swing states across the country, we have a comprehensive plan to protect our democracy — but we need your help to keep up our work.
There are a few reasons to be optimistic:
- Women are registering to vote in historic numbers after SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade.
- Our plan to defend democracy is modeled after our plan to fight GOP gerrymandering, which helped produce some of the fairest House maps this country has seen in decades in 2021.
But there’s also reason to worry: The midterm elections are just weeks away, and many of the candidates who win this November will be responsible for administering or certifying the election in 2024. It’s crucial that we do everything we can to help elect pro-democracy candidates this year if we want to ensure a smooth and fair presidential election two years from now.
