Friend, We are all aware of the threat that Iran represents to Israel, our greatest ally in the Middle East, not to mention other nations around the world. But lately, that threat has increased. In 2018, Iran launched an explosive-laden drone into Israeli territory for the first time. Since then, militant group Hezbollah has repeatedly used Iran-supplied drones in its attacks on Israel. And over the last year, Iranian drone attacks on U.S. forces in Syria and Iraq have also increased. |
That’s why Reps. Greg Meeks (D-NY) and Michael McCaul (R-TX), as well as Sens. Bob Menendez (D-NY) and Jim Risch (R-ID), introduced the Stop Iranian Drones Act earlier this year. The bill — passed by the House of Representatives in April and awaiting approval in the Senate — expands pre-existing sanctions on those who supply or transfer weapons to Iran to include drones.
It also establishes that it is U.S. policy to prevent Iran, and terrorist or militia groups aligned with Iran, from acquiring drones that can be used to attack the U.S. or its allies. This common sense legislation is key to protecting the U.S. AND Israel — and the need for such a bill is only becoming greater.
