Dear John,
Today is First Monday, which marks the beginning of the Supreme Court term. At the end of last term, we watched the Supreme Court’s conservative majority make controversial decisions that will have a lasting effect on the nation. Gun safety, separation of church and state, the government’s ability to fight climate change, and of course abortion rights were all significantly weakened by the radical decisions the Trump Court released last term.
Public trust in the Supreme Court is at an all-time low. The nine justices of the Supreme Court are largely unaccountable to the American people, whose lives they change with each new ruling. While judges at every other level of our federal courts are bound by an enforceable code of ethics, Supreme Court Justices are not. Join us in calling upon Congress to pass legislation establishing an enforceable ethical code of conduct for the U.S. Supreme Court that is equal to or more stringent than the judicial code of ethics for lower court judges: [link removed].
Several pieces of legislation have recently been introduced that would bolster accountability and transparency and enhance public trust in our judiciary. These include the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act of 2022; the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act of 2022; and the 21st Century Courts Act of 2022. All these bills would move us towards meaningful reform and help restore public trust in our courts.
Urge Congress to pass a binding Supreme Court Code of Ethics to prevent future corruption. Lend your name to the fight to restore public trust in the Supreme Court and to ensure Supreme Court Justices are held to a common-sense code of ethics. Sign on at [link removed].
Thank you for taking action,
