I welcome the news that Dennis Muilenburg has resigned from his post as CEO of Boeing.

I'm leading the congressional investigation into the design, development, and certification of the Boeing 737 Max. It's clear that Boeing made devastating decisions under Muilenburg's leadership to put profit above public safety - decisions that took hundreds of lives.

Recent reports also show that Muilenburg was attempting to pressure the Federal Aviation Administration into rushing the MAX back into service.

His departure is long overdue. The FAA should take as much time as it needs to ensure the safety of the flying public.

This commitment to safety is something I take very seriously.

Following the ValuJet crash in 1996, I led the charge in Congress to make sure FAA's sole objective is protecting the safety of passengers, and not promoting industry. I hope the decision to remove Muilenburg means that Boeing is also ready to mark a new chapter in its commitment to safety and accountability.
