Folks,
On November 8th, 435 House races will be up for election. Most will be uncompetitive safe victories for Democrats and Republicans alike. But there are a select few that will be decided on the margins, and the outcome of those races could very well decide control of the House. And in turn the future of reproductive rights, economic policy, and democracy in our country.
In Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is running in one of those races. That’s why I headed out there this past weekend to rally her supporters and campaign for her re-election.
I’ve always admired Abigail because she’s one of the most results-driven legislators in the country. I’ve seen her work with colleagues across the political spectrum to pass all sorts of critical legislation, from improving our nation’s infrastructure to combating climate change.
Now, she’s leading the charge to ban members of Congress and their spouses from trading stock. It’s a policy priority that is truly reflective of Abigail’s character. She’s ethical and courageous in her beliefs, and she’s not afraid to ruffle a few feathers in Congress while advocating for them.
That’s part of the reason why Republicans have always directed so much money towards trying to beat her. Yet, Abigail continues to win this tightly contested swing district. But this year, Republicans are increasing their effort. The House GOP’s campaign committee has listed her race as one of their top targets, and a dark money Republican group just launched a seven-figure ad campaign to try to unseat her.
Why are GOP interest groups campaigning so hard against Abigail? They know this is a tight race, and they’re looking to replace her with an extremist anti-choice candidate named Yesli Vega. Really, folks, she’s that bad. She’s suggested that rape victims can’t get pregnant, and would surely vote for a national abortion ban given the opportunity. Vega also appeared at a CPAC event with ultra-MAGA extremists like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Andy Biggs. Again, we can assume this is the group that she’ll join if she’s elected to Congress
This is the first House race I’ve focused on for a reason. Abigail is an extremely skilled legislator and an incredible leader in the House. But this race could very well be decided by a few hundred votes. It’s that close.
A few hundred votes could be the difference between an anti-choice extremist and one of the best members of Congress out there. Contribute today to help make the crucial difference in Abigail’s campaign and so many other great Democrats across the country.
