NEWS FROM POWER TO DECIDE

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

In light of the Supreme Court's recent abortion decision—which not only rolls back generations of reproductive rights, but also jeopardizes the reproductive health of generations to come— knowledge about and access to abortion within Hispanic communities is more essential than ever.

This year as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re taking time to recognize just a few ([link removed]) of the many amazing people and organizations working to improve Latino reproductive well-being and centering abortion access in all they do.

Let’s Talk Month

Every October, we celebrate the special relationship between young people and their champions through Let’s Talk Month. Throughout the month, we encourage everyone to have conversations about sex, love, relationships, and birth control.

Don’t wait to start talking! Check out our resources ([link removed]) for Let’s Talk Month and start a conversation today.

Our Newest Power Player

We’re committed to uplifting the many individuals championing young people’s reproductive well-being. This month’s Power Player is Roxy Szal, and Digital Editor and Producer for Ms. Magazine. Read her story ([link removed]) .

How We Recognized World Contraception Day

#ThxBirthControl Day ([link removed]) is right around the corner. But last week we celebrated our second favorite day of the year—World Contraception Day! Celebrated annually on September 26, it’s a day dedicated to celebrating what birth control makes possible for people all over the world. This year we offered up 5 ideas for how to celebrate ([link removed]) and showcased the importance ([link removed]) of passing the Right to Contraception Act.

A Bundle of Health Care

Power to Decide’s One Key Question ([link removed]) ^® (OKQ) interactive training oPreconception and Contraception Pathways to Care online training takes that conversation one step further by teaching providers how to offer preconception and contraception counseling and care in a personalized, non-judgmental, and unbiased way.

Both OKQ and Pathways to Care are available as stand-alone trainings. A discounted training bundle is available for those interested in taking both the OKQ and Pathways trainings. Simply visit our online shop ([link removed]) to begin your training.
POLICY UPDATES

Government Funded Through December

Fiscal year (FY) 2023 officially started on October 1, but Congress has not yet reached a deal to fund the government through the end of the fiscal year, which ends on September 30, 2023. Instead, Congress passed a short-term continuing resolution or CR to fund the government at the same level through December 16, 2022. In September, Power to Decide led a letter to Congressional leadership, along with 93 other organizations, requesting increased funding for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program and reauthorization of the Personal Responsibility Education Program. We will continue to use this letter in our advocacy efforts, so we encourage more organizations to sign on ([link removed]) .

Efforts to Advance, Restrict Reproductive Health

On September 15, Representative Suzanne Bonamici re-introduced ([link removed]) the Enhancing Questions to Understand Intentions for Pregnancy (EQUIP) Act in the House. The EQUIP Act seeks to improve reproductive well-being by funding demonstrations and evaluations of pregnancy desire screening tools by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Power to Decide is proud to join with the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, Physicians for Reproductive Health, and other reproductive health organizations endorsing ([link removed]) the bill.

In mid-September, anti-choice lawmakers introduced new legislation to ban abortion across the nation. The proposed federal abortion ban would further worsen the already devastating impact of the Dobbs decision in June. Read Power to Decide’s full statement ([link removed]) on the bill. As a reminder, last month we shared news of the variety of bills ([link removed]) members of Congress introduced to affirm and strengthen federal protections for reproductive health care. We still encourage you to urge your representatives ([link removed]) to support these measures.

Recent Changes to State Abortion Access

In September, complete abortion bans went into effect in Arizona, Indiana and West Virginia. As a reminder, Abortion Finder ([link removed]) is the most up-to-date and accurate resource on where patients can receive abortion care. You can find the legal status of abortion in all 50 states by visiting Abortion Finder’s State-by-State Guide ([link removed]) .

GENEROUS SUPPORT FROM OUR SPONSORS

We believe in a future where everyone can pursue the future they want, realize their full potential, and follow their intentions. As attacks on reproductive health care increase, so does the demand for contraception. Yet, for millions of people across the country, access to birth control is out of reach.

But, together, we can change that. By making a gift to BCBenefits, a contraceptive access fund, you can help provide access to free or low-cost birth control methods and appointments to people with limited incomes.

Since its launch in 2019, BCBenefits has helped more than 6,700 people access free birth control.

“It made it possible to take control of my future when I otherwise wouldn't have been able to.” -BCBenefits recipient (2022)

Together, we can ensure access to birth control for those who need it most. Donate today ([link removed]) .
