TAYLOR TURNEY
Congrats to Taylor Turney on being named Alaska Athlete of the Week!
Taylor had never raced an ultramarathon, let alone one with 60 obstacles but he crushed the Spartan Ultra 50K in Los Olivos, California, taking the victory in 5 hours, 24 minutes and 50 seconds over 50 kilometers (31 miles). The Service High School graduate caught the frontrunner at about mile 21 and never looked back, winning by more than four minutes.
The winner is selected by a panel each Friday and announced Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Sports Guys on CBS Sports Radio 590AM and 96.7FM. View past winners here.

Jordan Todd
A trio of Alaskans each were in the starting lineup for a pair of NJCAA women's basketball teams from Idaho that squared off in Nevada.
They were on the court a lot, too, as all three logged season highs in minutes.
Anchorage's Jordan Todd of College of Southern Idaho earned bragging rights over Palmer's Alex Carlton and Wasilla's Cheyenne Green of North Idaho College in a 63-55 victory at the Las Vegas Tournament.

Nathan Yockey of Coffman Cove continues to be a reliable scorer for the Highline College men's basketball team.
The 6-foot-4 sophomore netted 18 points in a 90-72 win over Olympic in NWAC, his ninth double-digit scoring effort in 12 games.

Undeterred by mud, five Anchorage cyclists held their own at the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Lakewood, Wash.

"It was muddier than I thought it was going to be," said James Stull, adding that his family's fleet of bikes had to be washed twice daily.
Ellie Mitchell of Anchorage had the Alaskan contingent's top result, placing sixth in the Under 23 female championships. The daughter of Joan Hansen Mitchell and Superal Mitchell, Ellie has also placed well at the mountain biking nationals in recent years.

Vante Hendrix
Anchorage's Vante Hendrix didn't hold back in his first game with the University of New Mexico men's basketball team.
The sophomore transfer scored all 12 of his points in a 10-minute span of the second half as the Lobos pulled away for a 91-71 rout of Grand Canyon in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Sadie Maubet Bjornsen in Davos
With one race remaining in Period 1 of the World Cup, Sadie Maubet Bjornsen of Alaska Pacific University is ranked fourth in the overall standings after finishing ninth on Dec. 15 at the 10K freestyle race in Davos, Switzerland. In six races so far this season, Maubet Bjornsen has placed as high as third and no worse than 16th.

Isaac Updike
Ketchikan's Isaac Updike delivered a strong performance at the USA Track and Field National Club Cross Country Championships at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The 27-year-old finished the men's 10-K race 22nd out of 617 runners with a time of 31:20.3.
Updike, of Ketchikan High fame, is a professional runner with the New York New Jersey Track Club
The former Eastern Oregon University star was the second-fastest runner for his club, which placed second out of 77 teams.

Jozey Martellaro
Jozey Martellaro of Fairbanks was instrumental on both sides of the ball to lead the Clark College women's basketball team in a 73-50 win over Green Valley in the NWAC.
The 5-foot-9 freshman wing collected season highs in points (15), 3-pointers (5), assists (7) and blocked shots (2) to go with five rebounds and one steal.
Martellaro, of West Valley High fame, has started eight of nine games.
She is averaging 8.0 points, 4.8 points and 2.4 assists per game.
Martellaro has reached double figures in scoring three times and rebounding once.

Mikayla Lantto
Mikayla Lantto of Palmer produced her first goal and first assist of the season for the Penn State University women's hockey team.
The freshman forward collected her first career points in a two-game series against Rochester Institute of Technology.
Lantto scored the decisive goal found the net at the end of the first period for the game's first goal in a 3-0 win.
In Game 2, she earned the primary assist on the game's first goal in a 6-2 victory.
The Lions of the Big Ten Conference are 6-8-4 on the season.
