This is how things should work: When we hand over our personal data online, we should be able to trust that our information will be well-protected.
Unfortunately, that trust has been steadily chipped away after massive data breaches, leaks, and misuse of customers' personal information. Now, we enter user agreements uncertain where our data might end up, what it might be used for, and even whether it will be used against us.
We need to create a solution that fits the times we live in. That's what I'm doing now in Congress. Will you stand with me as we work to ensure our privacy and the safety of our personal data?
When you walk into a doctor's or lawyer's office, there's a legal agreement in place requiring them to not misuse our personal information.
It should work the same for the tech industry.
I've put forth a measure that would protect personal data, prevent it from getting mishandled and abused, and hold companies accountable when it is:
My measure would:
Require online companies to secure personal data.
Require them to promptly report data breaches.
Require them to not use data in ways that will harm users.
Extend those requirements to third parties when data is shared or sold.
Any company found in violation of these rules could face fines from the Federal Trade Commission, and the FTC and state officials will have the authority to pursue both first- and third-party data collectors for violations.
Our lives revolve around the internet, and we're long past due for restoring Americans' faith in the security of their personal data. Will you add your name and show your support for our efforts?
Mahalo,
Brian
