I had a moment of free time this morning — which is a blessing these days as we sprint toward Election Day. As I was drinking my tea, I was reflecting on why I got into public service and why this race is so important. So I wanted to reach out and share a bit about the decisions that led me to run for the United States Senate.

Running for office was not something I’d ever imagined I’d do when I graduated from law school. I had never seen an African American woman sit behind the bench until I was a practicing lawyer. But it’s a moment that changed what I saw as possible, and I went on to run for judge myself.

When my first opponent said I couldn’t win because I was a mom, I put my twin sons in a stroller, and went door-to-door talking to voters. I beat him by 30 points. Ultimately, I went on to win two statewide races and become the first African American woman to serve as Chief Justice of North Carolina.

And now, Republicans are trying to bully me just like my first opponent did. Their super PACs are going to continue spending millions on false attack ads against me. But I refuse to back down.

I know firsthand that justice is too often out of reach for people. Too often the laws handed down by Washington leave our families behind while the wealthy and well-connected use our broken status quo to get ahead. And now, right-wing politicians are trying to roll back our Constitutional rights even further.

So this race is our opportunity to make real change, to give North Carolinians a leader in the Senate who will break through the division and gridlock to stand up for the people. My promise from the start of this campaign for U.S. Senate has been that I would pursue justice with a relentless refusal to see it abandoned. I will not accept a future where our children have fewer rights than we did.

But I know that flipping a Senate seat is not something any one person can do alone. It takes a dedicated grassroots effort — folks like you and me rolling up our sleeves to move mountains together.

Honestly, I wish what we’d already raised would be enough because I hate to ask for money. But Republicans are spending an average of almost $450,000 a day to attack me and try to buy this seat. So we need to make sure we have the resources to fight back and compete in every corner of our state. We must organize and speak to the hopes and needs of voters from the Appalachian Mountains to the Outer Banks.

So I’m leaning on you for support today. Can you please consider making a donation to flip this seat and expand our senate majority? We must not allow super PACs who want to uphold a corrupt and broken status quo to buy this Senate seat.
