This week we saw all that plagues the Republican Party and because of them, our country, which I chronicled at my growing Youtube commentary channel, The Takedown w/ Cliff Schecter. First, with the damage wrought by Hurricane Ian, we were reminded that we can stick our heads in the sand or refuse to look up in the sky, but science is science, climate change is real and it's only getting worse (to all Floridians affected by Ian, please know that my thoughts are with you). Thankfully, with the Inflation Reduction Act, President Biden and Democrats made the largest investment in climate change prevention and mitigation in American history. I say Democrats, because, shamefully, NOT ONE REPUBLICAN VOTED FOR IT. The enduring image may be Sharknado in Fort Myers. Yes, a shark was caught on video swimming down the streets of the Florida city. Much like with The Trump Era, sci-fi and horror films are becoming our reality. I discussed it in one of my videos, reminding viewers that Republicans can reject science, whether due to greed, religious zealotry or just plain cruelty, but science will win in the end. I also took a look at an outlandish Republican, Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano, through the eyes of Stephen Colbert's mockery (with some of mine added in, I must admit). Sadly, this traitor--who was part of the attemped coup at the Capitol January 6th, thinks women should be prosecuted for murder for having an abortion, has been filmed in a Confederate Uniform (psst, someone give him a history lesson about which side Pennsylvania was on) and hired as a consultant the the founder of the awful neo-Nazi site Gab that inspired the Tree of Life Temple mass-murderer in Pittsburgh--is representative of most Republican statewide candidates across the country. Thankfully, Mastriano's currently down by 10 points in the polls to PA Attorney General, Josh Shapiro. Which, led Stephen Colbert to list all I did in that last paragraph, and more, and sum up Mastriano in two words: "You Suuuuuck." I agreed with Colbert and added my own take on Mastriano's treachery, and how representative it is of the GOP overall. I hope you'll go give it a watch, and also subscribe to the channel! It is as sad as it is simple. Most mainstream media has proven unable to adjust to a world where one party--the Republican one--doesn't believe in governing, is thoroughly corrupt, in love with authoritarianism, thinks cruelty is a virtue and incompetence & ignorance are qualities to brag about. All they can do is "both sides" everything. Therefore we must build our own media. The more of you who subscribe to The Takedown, the more Youtube considers it worthy of promoting, increasing the impact we have on protecting our democracy. Plus, I think you'll really like it!
