Don't miss your chance to see a native bat up close from the convenience of your living room. Join us for a great presentation on the only true flying mammal and learn what makes bats so successful. Did you know that almost 1 in every 5 mammal species is a bat? Virginia is home to 17 species of bats, including the tricolored bat, recently proposed for protection as an endangered species by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Leslie Sturges will share some of her favorite facts about bats, review the species native to our region, talk about bat conservation, and provide an update on the impact of white-nose syndrome among Virginia's bat population.

Celebrate the spooky this October and learn all about the spectacular, secret lives of spiders. These eight-legged critters may be a little creepy to some, but they also are fascinating animals with unique hunting strategies. A favorite snack of many birds, arachnids are a crucial part of the ecosystem. Dr. Stellwagen, Research Assistant Professor at University of North Carolina, Charlotte, will discuss some of the scary and not-so-scary species that live in our region. You might be surprised by how clever, creative and, yes, even “cute,” spiders can be.

We’re hosting a hands-on introduction to playing a prize-winning bird-themed board game called Wingspan. We hope this session will pique your curiosity and you will later tune in on Tuesday, November 15, for a Zoom presentation by Elizabeth Hargrave, the creator of Wingspan. If you love birds and you love board games - you’ll love Wingspan! Imagine a game of Monopoly, but instead of using cash for real estate transactions, you are building a wealth of birds on your wildlife preserves by using real-life information about North American birds and their habitats, feeding behaviors, and nesting preferences. The event is free, but registration is required as space is limited.

Do you want a garden brimming with life for a fraction of the price you’d pay to install full-grown plants? Learn how to propagate native plants from seed with this helpful tutorial. Now is the time to collect and sow seeds in trays of seed-starter medium for over-wintering and sprouting seedlings in the spring and summer. Laura Beaty and Donna Murphy will recommend seed sources, share helpful tips and tricks, and answer questions from the audience.

Join us online to hear game designer and birder Elizabeth Hargrave speak about how she started birding, her journey to create the award-winning game Wingspan, its rise to popularity, and its impact. Wingspan is Ms. Hargrave’s first game, so you also can look forward to hearing about what she is working on now and her favorite nature-themed board games. As a prelude to Ms. Hargrave’s talk, plan to join us on Saturday, October 29th, to play the game together, in-person at the Arlington Central Library. Volunteers will be on hand to help explain how to play.
