John,
We’ve got to end our forever wars, and we can start by repealing the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force.
This outdated war authority is unnecessary for ongoing military operations, but as long as it remains, it can be used and abused by presidential administrations.
The House of Representatives recently passed a provision led by Rep. Barbara Lee to repeal this dangerous authorization in the annual National Defense Authorization Act. I was proud to vote for it. Now it’s on the Senate to act.
Please sign to show your support for repealing the 2002 Iraq war authorization and ending our forever wars.
As recently as January 2020, the Trump administration used the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) to justify the assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, which brought the U.S. dangerously close to war with Iran.
Although Congress is meant to be a check on presidents’ war powers in our democracy, Congress never authorized this move, which the UN concluded was "unlawful.”
Let’s make sure this doesn’t happen again. The 2002 AUMF is no longer relevant: The Saddam Hussein regime was overthrown in 2003 and a formal end to the U.S. war in Iraq was declared at the end of 2011.
This year is our best opportunity to finally repeal this outdated authorization once and for all. The House has already passed this provision and President Biden has expressed his support for repeal as well. Now, we need the Senate to act.
Please add your name to urge your senators to repeal the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force, which can be abused by presidential administrations.
Thank you for being by my side as we build a world where everyone can live safely and thrive.
In peace and solidarity,
Rashida
