It has been over two years since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the U.S. and the declaration of a public health emergency. As a result, families around the globe have experienced loss and were forced to adapt to a new reality that has been particularly harder to navigate for students. A?recent CDC study [ [link removed] ]?found more than a third of high school students experienced poor mental health during the pandemic, while almost half reported they often felt sad or hopeless. This adds significant stress to families that are already experiencing serious challenges from the pandemic.
We spoke to Indira Melgarejo, a mental health counselor serving families and children, to discuss the effects of the pandemic on children?s mental, emotional and educational wellbeing.
