Friends,
I hope you and your family are well! I wanted to provide you with a few updates regarding what’s going on –
Hurricane Ian Update
We are continuing to pray for Southwest Florida as they recover from Hurricane Ian and rebuild from the massive amounts of destruction and devastation it caused in this region especially. Click HERE for live updates on national coverage.
As South Carolina is affected by the storm today and into the weekend, I encourage you all to be smart, stay updated, check on your family, have an emergency plan, and stay safe! South Carolina is in a state of emergency, and state agencies are preparing for the storm's impact.
In the Third District, expect tropical storm-like conditions, heavy rain, and strong wind. Be aware of flash flooding today, and if there is a possibility of a flash flood in your area, move to higher ground. Click HERE for local updates.
Here are some resources addressing hurricane safety and readiness:
Here's the latest update on the path of Hurricane Ian through South Carolina:
Opposing the CR to Fund the Government
I voted "no" on the CR (continuing resolution) to fund the government for a wide array of reasons, the main reason being that our nation is over $30 TRILLION in debt. Excessive government spending fuels inflation that is already at a 40-year high and drives us deeper into a recession. Democrats left House Republicans out of the negotiation process and drafted a CR that continues to fund the Biden Administration's radical agenda and spends too much money while failing to address the real issues Americans are facing.
I have consistently voted against reckless government spending, and my record reflects this. For example, I previously voted against spending packages in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
National Clean Energy Week
This week was National Clean Energy Week, and I am proud South Carolina leads in delivering clean energy, especially through nuclear energy production. This summer, I led an “All of the Above” Energy Tour to the Third District of South Carolina where we witnessed the Palmetto State’s clean energy strategy firsthand, visiting Duke Energy’s nuclear reactors and hydro station. South Carolina’s nuclear power reactors produce 95% of the state’s carbon-free electricity and over half of the state’s total electricity. Nuclear is clean, reliable, affordable, and secure, and is the only carbon-free energy source that is available 24/7/365.
This week, I published an op-ed in the Washington Times where I expose the hypocrisy of a narrow “clean” energy strategy and the dirty reality of the Left's rush-to-green agenda. How clean is “clean” energy, and are Democrats’ “clean” energy solutions just dirty energy in a pretty package? Click HERE to read my latest op-ed on this.
Clean Energy Week Forum
I had the opportunity to speak at the Western Caucus’s National Clean Energy Week Forum this week where I highlighted the leading role the oil and gas industry plays in reducing emissions and how the Biden Administration should reverse course and end its war on American energy production. Innovation, not government regulation, is what allows the United States to lead in emissions reduction, and is what will help us become energy dominant again. Click HERE for the full forum.
Left Wing Extremism
There has been a concerning uptick in violent left-wing extremism just weeks after Joe Biden called roughly half the country “threats to democracy.” Eighteen-year-old Cayler Ellingson was run over with an SUV and tragically killed for being a "Republican extremist,” while the man who admitted to hitting and killing him is out on bail. And in Michigan, an 83-year-old pro-life volunteer was shot in the back while canvassing door-to-door after getting into a “heated conversation.” There has been nothing but silence from mainstream media and the White House… where’s the outrage over this violent political extremism?
Joe Biden's Energy Crisis
Joe Biden is singlehandedly driving the energy crisis by canceling domestic energy production and overregulating the oil and gas industry. The President's war on American energy production is costing us more at the pump and more to heat our homes this winter while making us energy dependent on other nations. As families are struggling financially due to inflation, natural gas prices are at a 14-year high, the average household is expected to pay 17% more this winter, and the national average gas price this Sunday was $3.71. Keep in mind, gas nationwide averaged $2.39 the day Joe Biden took office. It's time to unleash domestic energy production and make America energy independent again.
Carolinas Credit Union League
I had the opportunity to meet with the Carolinas Credit Union League this week during their trip to Washington. Thanks for the excellent services you provide for the people of South Carolina!
In the District
Nine years ago, the old Walhalla Presbyterian Church was devastated by a fire in their sanctuary. The church accumulated $900,000 in loans for repairs and improvements, and this week, the church celebrated a “burning of a mortgage” as they completely paid off this loan.
Airplanes up for show-and-tell at Laurens County Airport Sunday. The South Carolina Breakfast Club returned to Laurens and welcomed pilots across the state last Sunday after a two-year hiatus where people were invited to the airport to enjoy breakfast, look at airplanes up close, and chat with the pilots.
The Bassmaster College Classic Bracket will be hosted at Lake Greenwood this weekend. This collegiate fishing tournament invites eight of the top college anglers to compete in the 2023 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic in March.
The Pickens County School Board voted this Monday to ban the book “Stamped, Racism, Anti-Racism, and You” by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X from all their district classrooms and libraries. The board received major criticism from parents, and the board decided the book was not age-appropriate and was divisive.
It is an honor to serve the Third District of South Carolina. Should you or your family need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact my office directly.
Blessings and Liberty,
