It’s hard to believe the month of September is already coming to a close. I’m proud of the work we’ve done in Congress, including new action this week to invest in critical mental health services and lower the cost of healthcare. Now, I’m excited to be headed home to Rochester to spend the next few weeks meeting with local organizations and families in our community. Read more below.

Improving Access to Mental Health Services

These are challenging times—especially for young people in our community—and it’s critical that we prioritize our collective mental health and well-being. On Thursday, I was proud to vote in favor of the Mental Health Matters Act, a bill to help meet the increased demand for mental health services in schools.

This legislation is an important step forward in meeting the healthcare needs of our community. It will help to break down barriers that prevent families from accessing the mental health services they need and enhance existing in-school resources to better support our students. I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue uplifting families and helping students access the services they need to thrive.

Lowering Healthcare Costs

Rep. Morelle speaks with Older Americans

Earlier this year, a constituent named Susan shared with me her tragic story of rationing life-saving medications because she couldn't afford to refill them. She called it "drug hopping": determining which pills she could cut in half and which of her 10 prescriptions she could avoid filling just to make ends meet. Today, I can look Susan in the eye and tell her those days are over—because we finally passed legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs. The bill, which has been signed into law by the president, establishes a cap on out-of-pocket expenses, reduces the cost of Insulin, and allows Medicare to negotiate lower costs for some of the most expensive medications. For Susan and thousands of other seniors like her, this legislation will be life-changing.

Now, I’m happy to announce even more savings: Medicare Part B premiums are set to go down next year, making healthcare more affordable for older Americans and people with disabilities. But the work is not done—I will keep fighting to lower healthcare costs for you and your family.

I got to hear their thoughts and ideas about some of the most important issues facing our community: gun violence, healthcare, cybersecurity, and more. It’s always a privilege to spend time with the next generation of young leaders—I know that with talented students like this, our future is in good hands!

I was humbled to attend a wreath-laying ceremony in recognition of Gold Star Mother’s Day—a time to honor the mothers of our brave servicemembers killed in action.

To all Gold Star Mothers and Families: we will never forget your child’s heroic sacrifice. May you find comfort and support in the thanks of a grateful nation.

Sadly, we have seen millions of people in Puerto Rico and Florida impacted by devastating hurricanes. My heart goes out to those affected and their families, and I’m grateful for the many first responders working hard and risking their lives to keep everyone safe. You are all in my prayers.
