The midterm outlook for Democrats is different than it was a few months back. Voters appreciate that Democrats pushed through historic climate legislation, lowered prescription drug prices for seniors, and reduced the student debt burden for millions of Americans. They are rejecting Republicans’ war on abortion rights and pro-special interest agenda.
The GOP is starting to get antsy about turning the tide before Election Day. So they're turning to their secret weapon: dark-money donors.
I've been leading the fight against dark money for years, and I've seen a lot of the special interests' mischief up close. But the scale of their current operation continues to amaze. It was recently revealed that a single reclusive tycoon donated $1.6 billion to help the Republican apparatus. That money can be used to launch smear ads, disinformation campaigns, and voter suppression schemes. The scale of this effort is mind-boggling.
This is how big special interests try to rig our politics, and they know we're onto them. Special interests know that if a few more Democratic Senators get elected we'll be able to pass my DISCLOSE Act, which ran up against a Republican blockade in the Senate last week.
We have to get around that blockade. We can't let creepy billionaires and Mitch McConnell use dark money to steal the midterms out from under us.
