We're in a critical moment to finally repeal the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF).
The 2002 Iraq AUMF authorized war against Saddam Hussein's regime – allowing George W. Bush to invade Iraq. This outdated war authority is unnecessary for ongoing military operations, but as long as it remains, it can be used and abused by this or future administrations. The 2002 Iraq AUMF was used in January 2020 by the Trump administration to justify the assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, which Congress never authorized, the UN concluded as "unlawful", and brought the U.S. dangerously close to war with Iran.
It is dangerous to allow presidents to wage war unilaterally. It is Congress’s role to authorize and limit the president’s power to use force.

The House recently passed a provision to repeal this dangerous authorization in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The Saddam Hussein regime was overthrown in 2003 and a formal end to the U.S. war in Iraq was declared at the end of 2011 – the 2002 Iraq AUMF is no longer relevant.
There is a lot of momentum, and this year is our best opportunity to finally repeal this outdated authorization once and for all. The House has already passed this provision and President Biden has expressed his support for repeal as well. Now, we need the Senate to act.
Urge your senators to cosponsor and pass S.J.Res.10 and vote to repeal the 2002 Iraq AUMF!
