Dear Michigander,?

My team and I are focused on the issues that matter most to Michiganders. We are committed to ensuring you can pay your bills, feel safe in your communities, and have a good-paying job.??

That?s why we?re kicking off October by celebrating bipartisan bills to increase funding for the Secondary Road Patrol program, keeping you safe on the road. It?s why we?re investing in economic development projects to build on our auto industry leadership. These are the issues that matter to Michiganders, and these are the issues that matter to me. I will keep fighting to put Michiganders first.??

Sincerely,?

Governor Whitmer

Gretchen Whitmer
Governor of Michigan

Keeping Communities Safe

This past week I signed three bipartisan bills [ [link removed] ] increasing funding for the Secondary Road Patrol (SRP) Program. These bills will keep drivers safe in their communities by putting more officers on the road, improving recruitment and retention efforts, and bolstering training. These bills, along with the MI Safe Communities plan?launched last summer, are helping make our neighborhoods and our state safer. ?

Governor Whitmer signing bill to increase road safety

As a former prosecutor, public safety is a top priority for me. These bipartisan bills will improve road safety by putting more officers out on patrol. The 50% increase in funding for the SRP program will also improve law enforcement recruitment and retention by bolstering the funding stream and enabling sheriff departments to give their officers more stability. I will work with anyone to protect public safety, and I am proud of the bipartisan budget I signed earlier this year that ensures law enforcement at every level, from the Michigan State Police to local departments, have the resources they need to keep people safe. No one should feel unsafe as they go to work, drop their kids off at school, or run errands in their neighborhoods.??

House Bills 5569, 5732, and 5772 will increase the SRP fund by $5 million each year, up from $10 million to $15 million. This increased funding is now coming from the liquor fund, so that the SRP program doesn?t have to rely on fees and general dollar funds every year.??

Here?s to ensuring that every Michigander in our state can live freely and safely, both on and off the road.?

Investing in Our Economy

Governor Whitmer speaking with constituents

This week, we reached a bipartisan deal [ [link removed] ] empowering Michigan to compete for transformative economic development projects. The deal invests in our state?s Strategic Outreach and Attraction Reserve (SOAR) fund. This funding has the potential to create thousands of good-paying jobs for Michiganders.?

Earlier this week, I also joined the Michigan Economic Development corporation in announcing Michigan Strategic Fund Support [ [link removed] ] for a business growth project by Nexteer Automotive in Buena Vista Township and a community revitalization project in Detroit, as well as support for tech startups in Northern Michigan.??

These investments will help us continue driving economic growth by building on our auto industry leadership, keeping jobs in Michigan, and strengthening our entrepreneurial ecosystem. These actions will retain 1,100 manufacturing jobs, convert the old Studebaker Plant in Detroit?s Milwaukee Junction into 161 affordable apartments, and back a small business in Novi and high-tech, high-growth start-ups in Northern Michigan. Right now, Michigan?s economy is on the move with low unemployment, strong small business growth, and exciting economic development projects in every region.?

I will work with anyone to grow our economy and keep moving Michigan forward as we strengthen and position our state for future prosperity.?

Honoring Orange Shirt Day

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, or Orange Shirt Day. It is about remembering the legacy of legalized injustice and brutality towards Native children in the Indian Boarding school system.? These schools, in states across the nation, were designed to separate Native kids from their families, sever ties to tribal languages, and extinguish long-standing cultural customs.?

Governor Whitmer video about Orange Shirt Day [ [link removed] ]

The Department of the Interior?s Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative identified five Federal Indian Boarding schools that operated in Michigan.? The centuries-old, oppressive history of boarding schools is a part of our past that has not been told enough. This is why I proposed and fought for the budget to include funding for a statewide study on Indian Boarding schools.??

Today, on Orange Shirt Day, we take an honest look at our dark past. We acknowledge the generational trauma that continues to impact the community today. Today?and every day?that is our duty. To live our values, not just say them out loud. Together, I know we can build a bright future.?
