Good, better, and best are all on the ballot

Hi Friend,

Politics, like life, is filled with disappointment.

We often hear from members of the No Labels community something we feel ourselves: disappointment that one of our allies in Congress has done something, said something, or voted for or against something that falls short of our expectations.

Why did they do THAT??

This notion — that we can expect perfection from anyone in public life, including and especially from those who have earned our backing — is just not realistic.

Rather than feeling let down when one of our congressional allies does something that disappoints us, it is best to recall the words of the renowned political pundit Vince Lombardi, who said, “Perfection is not attainable. But if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”

We are proud of those in Congress with whom we work who fight for two-party solutions and stand with us to reduce the influence of the loud, angry voices on the extremes.

We also know that until there are more fundamental changes to the incentives in the overall system, too many of our folks will lose reelection and too often it will be a challenge for them to have perfect voting records in support of our shared agenda.

Congress is finishing up its pre-midterm work this week. Then we will have the November election, to be quickly followed by a lame-duck session with the prospect of some bipartisan legislation passing, and then a new Congress and a fast-developing presidential race.

In each of these stages, let’s support the chasing of perfection, knowing that our efforts will yield the kind of excellence the nation deserves and needs.

In the meantime, please go on social media and support some of the excellent allies who face tough election battles in just a few weeks:

They might not be perfect, but they are excellent.

All the best,

Liz Morrison

Five Facts on Presidential Spending Without Congressional Approval
By No Labels

Article I of the Constitution states that federal funds shall only be spent “in consequence of appropriations made by law,” and that only the Legislative Branch can make such appropriations. But presidents of both parties have sometimes skirted this requirement through executive orders or by reallocating funds.

Mitch McConnell Calls Kyrsten Sinema the ‘Most Effective First-Term Senator’ He’s Seen and Praises Her Defense of the Filibuster
By Bryan Metzger & Oma Seddiq

"I've only known Kyrsten for four years, but she is, in my view — and I've told her this — the most effective first-term senator I've seen in my time in the Senate," the Republican leader said. "She is, today, what we have too few of in the Democratic Party: a genuine moderate, and a dealmaker."

Without This, the Country’s Climate Plans Are in Danger
By Washington Post Editorial Board

To call the plan from Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) “permitting reform” undersells its importance. The United States’ existing energy infrastructure was built to run on fossil fuels. If the country is to transition quickly to renewables and other nonpolluting sources of energy, it will need to build a lot of new facilities — solar farms, wind turbines, geothermal plants and power lines to connect it all to the grid.

Making the Electoral Count Count: Congress Must Reach a Consensus on Election Reform
By  Daily News Editorial Board

Democracy-preserving changes to the outdated 1887 Electoral Count Act, passed at a time when legislators couldn’t imagine a situation like the shameful events that led up to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, must be approved by Congress. The question now is whether that will be the version passed last week by the House, the version introduced in the Senate, or something in between.

Democrats, Republicans Must Unite Against Extremism
By Phil Heimlich & Rachel Baker

Extremism hurts us all. Unfortunately, many Republican candidates across Ohio continue to echo Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election. They justify the actions of the Trump supporters who attacked the U.S. Capitol and align themselves with white supremacists and other militant groups working to undermine our democracy.

McConnell, Schumer Back Bill To Prevent Efforts To Subvert Presidential Election Results
By Amy B Wang

Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) have endorsed a bipartisan electoral count reform bill in the Senate, all but cementing its passage and giving the legislation a boost as Congress seeks to prevent future efforts to subvert presidential election results.
