You achieved so much in 2019 for debt justice

Dear friend,

We’re so grateful for your support this year. Debt justice is needed more than ever both around the world and here in the UK. With 31 countries facing a national debt crisis and one in four people struggling with debts in the UK, it’s been a busy year. But campaigning together we’ve achieved so much, read some of the highlights below.
We were honoured to stand with Mozambican campaigners Denise Namburete and Paula Monjane ([link removed]) during their trip to London earlier this year. They came to hold UK banks to account for issuing secret loans to the Mozambique government that have thrown the country into crisis. Some bankers have pleaded guilty ([link removed]) but the fight for justice continues. Transparent lending is a priority for Jubilee Debt Campaign and we rallied over 50 UK MPs ([link removed]) to the cause.

Mozambique was also hit by cyclone Idai ([link removed]) which deepened the country's debt crisis as the government was forced to take on more debt to rebuild. Extreme weather events are becoming more common due to climate breakdown and we're calling for permanent debt relief ([link removed]) in response to climate change disasters.
The debt crisis in the global south is growing. This year hundreds of us called on the new IMF chief to bail out people not banks ([link removed]) . As head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva is one of the most powerful leaders in global finance. Together we put the debt crisis at the top of her agenda.
Debt Week 2019 went off with a blast! Personal debt levels in the UK are rocketing and one in four people are struggling. During Debt Week people took action in their communities with stalls and special events taking place across the UK. Hundreds of us wrote to our parliamentary candidates during the general election, urging them to commit to ending the debt trap.

We have big plans for the year ahead. Thanks to our generous supporters and match funding from the Big Give Christmas Challenge we managed to raise £50,000 towards next year's campaign! We will fight rip-off lending in the UK and demand action to stop the debt crisis affecting 31 countries around the world. Stay tuned.

Seasons greetings, with love and solidarity,
From all the Jubilee Debt Campaign team

P.S. To find out about the role of debt in Britain's economy take a look at one of our most popular articles this year revealing the truth about the UK's debt. ([link removed])
