Our 20th anniversary, Mindfulness in our Survivor Care, and more.

THIS MONTH AT

20 years ago, we were a group of 4 friends trying to make a difference. Today, we have over 80 staff on three continents providing prevention education and survivor care services to children. You’ve been a part of making this happen. Together, we’ve helped over 70,000 children around the world.

Rob reflected recently on ([link removed]) what 20 years of working to end child trafficking means to him, and how this organization got its name: "This month, 20 years ago I stood in a brothel with undercover investigators, looking through a glass wall where there were young girls wearing red dresses. Each girl had a number pinned to her dress that corresponded to menus. The children sat motionless, watching cartoons on a crackling TV… except one girl. She was staring at us with a piercing gaze."

September is Suicide Prevention Month. Many of the core issues that make children vulnerable to trafficking also put them at risk of suicide. In our child trafficking prevention curriculum, Not a Number, we address vulnerabilities – things like rejection from family, addiction, bullying, low self-esteem, and previous sexual victimization. There are organizations across the U.S. that have facilitators bringing the Not a Number curriculum to young people in their communities. They work to build trust with youth while giving them opportunities to bravely talk about what they’re going through. One facilitator reflected on her recent time using Not a Number, "on two separate occasions youth disclosed suicidal ideation and plans, and I was able to refer them to immediate crisis services that resulted in mental health placements."

Your support brings equipped professionals to support children recovering from trauma. Dr. Gundelina Velazco (pictured here) on shared this story about mindfulness in our Survivor Care:
I asked one girl at the Love146 Philippines Round Home, “What do you see?”
And the girl said, “I seem to see a man coming towards me.”
I said, “No, that is not what you see. Right here, right now. What do you see?”
She said, “Oh, I see you, I see the other girls. I see the trees.”
I said, “Very good. What do you hear?”
She said, “Sometimes I hear the hurting words of people blaming me for what happened.”
I said, “No, that is not what you hear. Right now. Here. What you hear are my voice, the wind, the cricket. You are here right now... What do you have right now?”
She said, “Peace.”
I said: “Stay with that reality. Stay with that feeling of having peace."

When you use Amazon Smile, Amazon donates 0.5% of qualifying purchases to a charity of your choice. So for every $100 you spend, $0.50 is donated! Ok, ok, maybe it doesn’t seem like much, but it really adds up for us! In fact, through the years, Love146 supporters have raised almost $50,000 for Love146 simply by using Amazon Smile while they shop.

Many people have heard about their city or region being a "hotspot" of trafficking. The truth is, Trafficking occurs wherever there are people. If you looked at a map of trafficking referrals, major highways, and human population density, you’d find they are often closely aligned. Ultimately, our fixation with a “hotspot” or “hubs” of trafficking may lead us to ignore the areas with high rates of trafficking that are not being reported or identified due to lack of awareness among community members or barriers to reporting as a result of community dynamics (e.g., victims may be more hesitant to report victimization in smaller communities where people know each other). The bottom line is, trafficking is happening in every community, no matter where we live.
