Due to a historic fourth consecutive failed rainy season, soaring food prices and an underfunded humanitarian response, there has been a meteoric increase in the number of children facing extreme food insecurity in Somalia. With this malnutrition crisis escalating daily, it appears famine could occur as soon as next month.

Crossing a desert on foot with a newborn babyAndrelis, 21, was grateful for the opportunity to rest her weary feet when she arrived at the reception center supported by UNICEF and partners in Colchane, Chile. She had already traveled thousands of miles with her partner and two small children, weaving across the Andean desert in search of a better life. Her family’s journey is not yet done, but the camp offers a respite from the extreme weather and harsh conditions they have endured.
