** Just wait until Rolls-Royce buyers start asking for their hand out.

CNBC ([link removed]) (12/15/19) reports: "Of all the headlines about Greta Thunberg’s U.S. tour this fall, one that traveled widely was this: The newly minted Time 2019 Person of the Year made her way from her native Sweden to America via sailboat, because she thinks jetliners emit too much carbon. The $800 billion annual market for airfares and the $700 billion market for equipment, led by jets, results in an aviation sector that produces about 2% to 3% of the world’s carbon emissions, according to jet manufacturer Airbus. Reducing them is among the industry’s top, and toughest, challenges for the next decade or more...Rolls-Royce has partnerships with Airbus and other players to work on both hybrids and fully electric planes. Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies, is selling a more fuel-efficient engine technology now, while its parent company
works on longer-range projects, spokesman John Thomas said...Fully-electrified planes at passenger scale are far away, and so far are being designed in the expectation of serving shorter-term flights with fewer passengers. Eviation’s plane is designed to seat nine."

** "… the current U.S. administration’s rollback of dozens of Obama-era positive climate mitigation [and] the increasing use of disinformation on many fronts to weaken our democracy, and push the U.S. toward becoming a petroleum autocracy like Russia or Saudi Arabia."

(12/19/19) reports: " A little sticker is attached to just about every gas pump in America. Usually issued by the local county, it signifies that that station has been inspected and assures that you're getting every drop of the gallon you paid for. Electric vehicle charging stations haven't had such stickers, or inspections, or assurances. But in California, that's about to change, in ways that may alter how all Americans fuel their electric cars. An obscure state agency, the Division of Measurement Standards (DMS), has just finished a set of strict new rules to govern how charging stations measure their output and communicate with customers. For the last four years, the regulator and the charging companies it will soon regulate have been engaged in a quiet but intense battle over the terms. How accurate does a charging station need to be in measuring electrons? Does the station need a digital display, like at a gas station, or is a smartphone enough? California is the first state to
answer these questions and to enforce them. Since half of all EVs are sold here, its practices are likely to become the template for other states. 'We want to mold the national standard as much as we want to mold the state regulation,' said Samuel Ferris, a senior environmental scientist at DMS."

Meanwhile, they can't even get their own state in order.

(12/12/19) column: " California State Controller Betty Yee admits to paying 49 million bills last year. Yet, she won’t produce a single transaction subject to our public records request for line-by-line state spending. Out of the 50 states, California is the only one that refuses to produce its state checkbook to our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com. Even though it’s home to Silicon Valley, the state government isn’t letting tech drive transparency when it comes to its own records. It shouldn’t take subpoenas and litigation to force open the books. Last year, Yee paid 49 million bills for about $320 billion in payments. If you can make the payment, then you can track the payment. The state controller’s office – whose job it is to stop waste, fraud, corruption, and taxpayer abuse – may be in violation of transparency laws. In 2013, then-California State Controller John Chang rejected our public records request for the state checkbook telling us: stop asking because the records can’t be located.
Today, six-years later – Yee is still parroting the same answer.

If all the Canadian families could set their thermostats a bit lower this winter it would really help Trudeau save some face at the U.N.

(12/20/19) reports: "Canada is on track to substantially miss its 2030 targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, new government data show. The numbers, released Friday, show how significant the work ahead is for Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked Mr. Wilkinson to find a way for Canada to 'exceed' its 2030 emissions targets in his mandate letter. The latest numbers show most of the progress made in government policies over the past year was canceled out by other factors that raised emissions projections. The report, which will form part of Canada’s submission to the U.N.'s Framework Convention on Climate Change, shows the country needs to cut emissions by another 77 megatonnes over the next decade to meet its targets. That’s down slightly from last year, when government numbers showed a 79-megatonne gap."
