A critical turning point: The Murdochs vs. Trump |
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, political analysts and journalists are speculating on the major shift in the Murdochs' relationship with former President Donald Trump. The speculation stems from recent news coverage by the family's media properties — Fox News, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post — all of which have taken on a critical lens of the former president's role in the January 6 insurrection.
This marks a critical turning point in what has long been a tenuous relationship between the Murdoch family and Trump. In 2016, Rupert Murdoch was not an early supporter of Trump's presidential run. However, he eventually changed his tune as Trump's popularity grew with Fox News viewers.
"It's almost a repeat of 2016, where the family seems to be turning on Trump yet again. But there's always been this interesting dynamic between Donald Trump and Fox News, where the base audience really likes him. So, how much they [the Murdochs and their media properties] can break away from Trump will be interesting to watch," says Jim Rutenberg, New York Times journalist and co-producer of CNN's The Murdochs: Empire of Influence.

Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy returns next Sunday |
Next Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, CNN will air all-new episodes of Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. Viewers will have front-row access to some of Italy's most appetizing cuisines across four new regions.
Tucci journeys to the country's northwest region where he indulges viewers in the rich pesto alla Genovese of Liguria. Later, he takes a trip to Italy's southern region and showcases the airy focaccia Barese of Puglia and the sharp pecorino shepherd’s cheese of Sardinia. Then, in a deeply personal, witty, and warm odyssey of gastronomic delights, Tucci makes a special visit to Calabria, the region where his grandparents were born, to learn what has changed since he last visited as a twelve-year-old boy.
Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy premieres next Sunday, October 9, at 9 p.m ET. But if you can't wait, you can watch episodes from season 1 on Saturday starting at 11 p.m. ET. All season 1 episodes are also available to stream on CNNgo and Discovery+.
But first, here's a look at some of Tucci's most delectable bites:
|
A Venetian classic that Tucci argues is "just as theatrical as Venice," this risotto and cuttlefish dish boasts a mild creamy parmesan taste with fresh peeled tomatoes, black cuttlefish ink and rice. |
This nutty pasta dish combines the delicious flavors of beetroot, porcini mushrooms and black garlic to create a flavorful pasta sauce that compliments but doesn't upstage the star of the show: truffle. |
Inspired by a family-run pizzeria in Turin, Italy, this mouthwatering dish is made of Tuscan crust and creamy tomato sauce, topped with optional servings of artichokes, anchovies, olives, salami, ham, cherry tomatoes, onions and sausage. |
