October Devotion

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:20)

Years ago, I heard Rev. Sue Nilson Kibbey teach about prayer walking.  She suggested we walk a particular area in the church praying for a specific need. I decided to prayer walk the construction site of our future building.  As I walked, I asked the Holy Spirit to guide and empower our ministry. I found this to be a simple, yet powerful way to pray and felt the presence of God all around me.

In her book, Flood Gates: Holy Momentum for A Fearless Church, Sue Nilson Kibbey offers examples for using prayer walking in your church. She suggests pastors and laity walk through their church buildings as part of their regular meetings, asking God to breakthrough in new ways. Persons could pause in a specific location to focus their prayer, leaving a Post-it note to signify places prayer took place. Another way to prayer walk is to ask church members to walk through their neighborhood asking God to identify people to reach for Christ. Prayer walking can be done silently or aloud.  While prayer walking may not speak to all people, like the other forms of prayer we have explored, it might be one some people find empowering.
