Senator Joe Manchin just withdrew the “Energy Independence and Security Act of 2022!” This bill would have attempted to ram through the Mountain Valley Pipeline and radically weakened safeguards for our communities and environment!
The legislation would have made America more dependent on fossil fuels not less, locking the country into further years of climate emissions and pollution!
Yet, Manchin didn't have the 60 votes and he pulled the bill due to you and everyone who called their legislators! This is a momentous victory!
A broad coalition of climate, environmental and environmental and social justice organizations and activists placed enough pressure on senators, including Illinois Senator's Durbin and Duckworth, forcing Senator Manchin to withdraw his bill!
You told your members of Congress this dirty deal was unacceptable! And... they listened!
Yet, like much legislation, Senator Manchin can still revive this destructive bill. He will have 2 more opportunities to resuscitate his dirty deal prior to the end of 2022: in mandatory defense spending legislation and during the lame duck session following the election.
We must remain vigilant! Watch for further updates over the next 2-3 months. We and our allies in the climate movement will continue to monitor the situation. We intend to stop this zombified dirty deal once and for all!
