On July 26, 1969, the Young Lords Organization formed in New York City. The Young Lords were community organizers and servants of the people; rebels and revolutionaries; socialists and internationalists. They believed in the power of the people to defeat capitalism and to free Puerto Rico from colonialism.

Democracy Now! co-host Juan González, who helped found the NYC Young Lords organization and served as its first minister of education, will join in a discussion of the group’s radical history and its pivotal role in spreading awareness of Puerto Rican culture and history.

Juan González will be joined by Jamal Joseph, Felipe Luciano, Mickey Melendez, Denise Oliver-Velez, Carlito Rovira at this public kick-off event to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Young Lords in New York.

The discussion will be streaming live from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in NYC and will be moderated by Dr. Johanna Fernandez, with performances by mahina movement, Nuyorican Poet Jani Rose and percussionist Xen Medina.
