The government that spends as much on wars as the rest of the world combined sure seems divided over partisanship and impeachment. Yet it remains smoothly united in approving more funding for its military than ever—funding with which to continue in the name of democracy wars supported by 16% of the U.S. public.

Those of us on this planet who favor peace need to be just as united and determined. So, as we approach the start of a new decade, we’re reflecting on the past—on both the travesties brought on by the global expansion of militarism and war, as well as the resistance and the progress being made to abolish the institution of war once and for all.

With each new decade, war continues to be an increasing public health threat: death counts in wars have shifted heavily from combatants to civilians (disproportionately affecting elderly and young people). Homelessness, trauma, orphaning, and disease have shown staggering proliferation as a result of increased militarism across the globe.

Additionally, war is one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of our planet (and the U.S. military is the single biggest polluter on earth). War cuts-off access to clean food and water; it advances racism and xenophobia by reenforcing pernicious stereotypes and hatred; civil liberties are restricted in the name of war; and the risk of nuclear disaster is now as high as it's ever been.

But war is a singular preventable epidemic. We can, and should, end war—all wars. Not only because war is immoral but also because ending it is practical. And all signs point to a growing nonviolent base committed to getting this done.

Ending war makes sense.
