A round-up of news and ways to take action from this September.

I hope you're as prepared as you can be for tomorrow's energy price rise. Even with the extra support from the UK government, millions of us are facing soaring costs – as our map of energy crisis hotspots in England and Wales shows. ([link removed])

All in all we've got a very uncertain autumn ahead of us. So it's extra important that we stick together to look out for people and planet. And let's keep pushing the government for the urgent action needed to help us stay warm as we move into the colder months. ([link removed])

Here are a few ideas for other ways to take action in the coming weeks. Plus some all-important good news.
HOW TO PROTECT AREAS AT RISK FROM FRACKING

Last week the UK government officially lifted the fracking ban in England. A decision that defies logic, given the lack of community support.

We stopped fracking once. And we’ll do it again. But now it’s been given the green light, lots of us could be impacted by fracking sites where we live. Over a quarter of local authorities in England are covered by existing licences to explore for oil and gas, which could involve fracking.

SHOWING SOLIDARITY THIS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

This Black History Month we're celebrating Black heritage, achievements and culture.

People from African and Caribbean backgrounds have been a fundamental part of British society for centuries. But their contribution is often overlooked or distorted.

Throughout October we'll be spotlighting the work of Black activists, exploring the impact of colonisation on climate breakdown, and sharing guidance for allyship in the climate movement. Make sure to keep an eye on our social channels.
HOW LEICESTER GOT PESTICIDES OUT OF ITS PARKS

Now some good news from Leicester, where an amazing Friends of the Earth group is saving its local area from harmful pesticide spraying.

After months of hard work, the group got to celebrate when the city council agreed with their demands to stop pesticide use in its parks. A big win for nature. And only the first milestone. There's a lot more to come from this incredible local campaign.

Pesticides are causing big trouble for nature in the UK. Particularly for bees – whose numbers are in serious decline because of threats like this. Find out how you can support our pollinators and make space for nature with bee-friendly wildflower planting.

Lots of us are already doing our bit to shop responsibly. But with brands falling over themselves to promote their latest “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” product ranges, it’s not always easy to work out whether their green credentials are up to scratch.

HOPE FOR HORSE HILL

Now an update on a legal case we’ve been supporting. A case challenging Surrey County Council’s decision to approve oil drilling at Horse Hill without considering its full climate impacts. Brought by campaigner Sarah Finch on behalf of the Weald Action Group.

Last year Sarah’s case went to the Court of Appeal. And a narrow split decision saw judges rule that the planning permission for the oil development at the Horse Hill site was lawful.

But the story doesn't end there. Sarah’s just received the amazing news that she’s been granted permission to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court! And we’ve applied to act as the legal intervener again, to support her appeal. This case really matters. I’ll share more news as it comes.
