Hurricane Ian Leaves Florida Devastated

NBC: President Joe Biden said Hurricane Ian may have been responsible for “substantial loss of life” and could end up being the deadliest storm in Florida history. The reported death toll from the storm as of Thursday afternoon stands at seven, although the state of Florida has so far refused to officially comment on fatalities. More than 2.5 million customers across Florida were without power Thursday morning after Ian, now a tropical storm, walloped the state as one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the United States, causing widespread devastation and flooding that trapped residents in their homes (NBC). Orlando Sentinel: Deadly Hurricane Ian was downgraded to Tropical Storm Ian on Thursday morning and moved off Florida’s East Coast by 11 a.m., but was still dumping record amounts of rain to bring “catastrophic flooding” to the region (Orlando Sentinel).

Revised Report Shows GDP Fell 0.6 Percent in Q2 Proving US to be in a Recession

Fox News: The U.S. economy shrank for the second consecutive quarter in the three months ended June, according to the final estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, meeting the criteria for a so-called technical recession as raging inflation and higher interest rates weighed on spending. The updated report, released Thursday, showed that gross domestic product (GDP), the broadest measure of goods and services produced across the economy, shrank by 0.6% on an annualized basis in the second quarter. That is below the initially reported 0.9% decline and unchanged from the second reading of a 0.6% decline (Fox News). Axios: The notable revisions were for gross domestic income (GDI). As the name suggests, the measure sums up all of the income in the economy — business profits, interest payments and wages. It initially painted a rosier growth picture. One driver behind the downward GDI revision was slower labor compensation than initially reported. In other words, worker wage growth wasn’t as hot as we thought (Axios).

Mortgage Rates Skyrocket in One Week; Highest in 15 Years

Wall Street Journal: Mortgage rates rose to their highest level in more than 15 years, a new high since the 2008-09 financial crisis that adds pressure to the already cooling U.S. housing market. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage climbed to 6.7%, according to a survey of lenders released Thursday. lt was the highest rate since July 2007 and marked the sixth week in a row of rising rates. This week’s rate was up from 6.29% last week. Moves that large in a single week have occurred only a handful of times since Freddie Mac started tracking them more than 50 years ago. A year ago, rates were 3.01% (Wall Street Journal). CNN: The Fed’s aggressive rate hikes are having the intended effect of easing demand, particularly in housing. As a result of the higher rates, home prices have softened and sales have decreased. But there is still a shortage of available homes for sale, which has kept prices elevated (CNN).

Six States File Lawsuit Against Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness

National Review: Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, and South Carolina joined together to file a lawsuit against the Biden administration on Thursday in an attempt to stop the president’s announced student loan-forgiveness program from taking effect. The attorneys general spearheading the legal challenge also submit that “no statute permits President Biden to unilaterally relieve millions of individuals from their obligation to pay loans they voluntarily assumed” (National Review). Reuters: Critics of the plan raised concerns over its inflationary impact, while the White House said it was fiscally justified because the federal deficit was on track to drop by $1.7 trillion reduction in the current fiscal year compared with the prior year. The smaller deficit is largely due to the end of many COVID-19 aid programs and unexpectedly higher revenues. As of June 30, 43 million borrowers held $1.6 trillion in federal student loans. About $430 billion of that debt will be canceled, the CBO estimated (Reuters).

Germany Claims Russia is Waging an “Energy War,” Takes on 200 Billion of Debt to Help Consumers

Barrons: German’s finance minister warned Thursday that Berlin was locked in an “energy war” against Vladimir Putin’s Russia as his government announced a major new fund to cap soaring energy prices. “We find ourselves in an energy war over prosperity and freedom,” Finance Minister Christian Lindner told reporters, underlining that the massive shield against energy costs was a “crystal clear answer to Putin that… we are strong economically” (Barrons). Politico: The German government will take on 200 billion (in euros) in fresh debt to implement a gas price cap aimed at shielding consumers and companies from high energy costs, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced Thursday (Politico). Post Millennial: FLASHBACK: Germans officials laughed at Trump in 2018 when he warned their country would become “totally dependent on Russian energy.” Germany currently faces an energy crisis for that exact reason (Twitter).

Political Rival Comes to Meloni’s Defense: “She is Not a Danger to Democracy”

Katie Pavlich: Speaking during a Democratic Governors Association reception and fundraiser in Washington D.C. Wednesday night, President Joe Biden compared Italy’s new and conservative prime minister Giorgia Meloni to Chinese dictator Xi Jinping… Meloni campaigned on God, pride in country and defense of family values to win her place as Italy’s next prime minister and yet, the left continues to paint her as a “threat to Democracy.” She was elected by voters (Townhall). Kreately.in: Matteo Renzi: ex Italian PM, a liberal yet shuts up CNN, who cried Mussolini at her! “Personally I was against Giorgia Meloni, I’m not her best friend, we are rivals but she is not a danger to democracy, the idea there is a risk of fascism in Italy is absolutely fake news” (Twitter).

Meta Halts Hiring Amid Losing $710 Billion

Bloomberg: Meta Platforms Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg outlined sweeping plans to reorganize teams and reduce headcount for the first time ever, calling an end to an era of rapid growth at the social media giant. In what would be the first major budget cut since the founding of Facebook in 2004, Zuckerberg said the company will freeze hiring and restructure some teams to trim expenses and realign priorities. Meta will likely be smaller in 2023 than it was this year, he said (Bloomberg). Wall Street Journal: Meta’s shares closed down 3.7% Thursday. The stock is off more than 59% this year, and the company’s market value has dropped more than $710 billion since its peak in September 2021 (Wall Street Journal).

Biden Appoints “Special Diplomat” for Plants and Animals

Washington Post: For the first time, the United States is designating a special diplomat to advocate for global biodiversity amid what policymakers here and overseas increasingly recognize as an extinction crisis. Monica Medina is taking on a new role as special envoy for biodiversity and water resources. She currently serves as the department’s assistant secretary for oceans and international environmental and scientific affairs (Washington Post). Katie Pavlich: President Joe Biden has created a new “special diplomat” position to represent…plants and animals… What the paper left out is the connection Medina has to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain (Townhall). Reporter Gabriella Hoffman: The individual is Monica Medina, who will act as “special envoy for biodiversity and water resources” for the State Department. And guess who she’s married to? Ron Klain (Twitter).

Democrats Block GOP Attempt to Get Tougher on Fentanyl Trade

Spencer Brown: A bill that would permanently put fentanyl-related substances in schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act was blocked on Wednesday by 220 House Democrats who voted against considering the legislation that would have given the government more power to crack down on the criminal enterprises profiting off of lethal fentanyl-related drugs (Townhall). House Rules Republicans: Fentanyl is pouring across Biden’s open border & claiming American lives at rates never before seen. We need to secure the border & fully prosecute traffickers, but @HouseDemocrats blocked @HouseGOP requests to consider a bill to keep fentanyl a controlled substance (Twitter).
