John,
I wanted to let you in on what I believe is the most important race to make progress on my top issue: Community safety. After 24 years as Hennepin County Attorney, Mike Freeman is retiring and the seat is open. One of the two remaining candidates, Martha Holton Dimick, is my neighbor. Martha and I have known each other for over 20 years. She was the north Minneapolis community prosecutor when I started the PEACE Foundation in 2003. We worked closely together against slumlords to address blighted properties when I was on the city council and she was the deputy city attorney in Minneapolis. Martha will bring the same community commitment to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office that she has shown throughout her professional career. She has been a consistent advocate for police accountability. She has also been clear in her opposition to abolishing the police department. Martha embodies the “both/and” mentality that we need to embrace in Minneapolis and across the country if we are going to advance racial equity by addressing both criminal justice reform and community violence.
