Dear John,
In all my years in politics, the corporate media's bias has never been worse than it is right now.
Joe Biden gives a speech defending democracy and criticizing MAGA Republicans who violently assaulted the U.S. Capitol. The media's response? To attack Biden for being too harsh.
Donald Trump gets caught red-handed stealing top-secret documents from the White House, and the media spins it as a political victory for Trump.
Seriously, people. This is bananas.
We founded Inequality Media Civic Action in part because we could no longer count on the corporate media to inform voters in a reliable, unbiased way. That work is needed now more than ever, with our democracy under assault from MAGA Republican election deniers and the corporate media still insisting that "both sides" are the same.
We have less than six weeks left before the all-important midterm elections. Will you make a donation to help support Inequality Media Civic Action as we fight to overcome corporate media bias, get the truth out, and save our democracy from the MAGA Republicans?
We all know how awful Fox News and right-wing talk radio are. But it's not just the conservative media that's a problem.
Case in point: A couple weeks ago, I received an email from a producer at CBS asking me to appear on the "Dr. Phil" show, which happens to be tied for the top-rated daytime talk show in America.
The framing of the issues presented to me by the producer was so slanted that for a moment I almost thought someone was putting me on. Allow me to quote the email directly, so you know I'm not exaggerating:
"For this conversation we will be asking questions like do college admissions enroll minorities over prospective Caucasian students? Are Caucasian teachers and professors being laid off to 'make up for past discriminations' against minority educators, as seen in Minneapolis?"
What's going on here? Dr. Phil isn't known as a right-wing demagogue. So why are his producers teeing up a race-baiting segment pushing lies about "reverse racism?"
Meanwhile, over at CNN, the corporate bosses have sent a directive that they are no longer to use the term "Big Lie" to describe Donald Trump's, well, big lie that the 2020 election was stolen. And then they dumped two of their strongest critics of MAGA election denial, Brian Stelter and John Harwood.
With less than six weeks left before the midterm elections, we're going all out to get the vote out and educate voters about the threats we face from the MAGA Republicans running for Congress, state legislatures, and the key state-level offices that oversee our elections.
Our plan to fight back is to bypass the corporate media filter and speak directly to voters with proven-effective videos and explainers created by the most talented artists and producers around.
It's working, and we're now one of the only progressive organizations with a following that is large enough to go toe to toe with the biggest right-wing voices online. But between now and Election Day, we need to really ramp up our operations to break through the corporate media's "both sides" bias and make sure the voters know what's at stake.
Will you make a donation to help support Inequality Media Civic Action and defend our democracy from the MAGA Republicans?
Thank you for joining us in the fight to save our democracy,
Robert Reich
