Research forms the basis of everything we do at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. As the largest private funder of suicide prevention research, we help to shape suicide prevention strategies around the world by funding, supporting, and influencing the most innovative, impactful, and forward-thinking researchers and studies. All of our programming and initiatives are evidence-based. It is thanks to suicide prevention research that we are always learning more, and know that suicide can be prevented.
That’s why we are dedicating October to highlighting research, and referring to the month as Rocktober, short for Research plus October! This Rocktober, we encourage you to learn more about what we know about suicide through research:
- Watch our library of short, informative [Research Videos]([link removed]), featuring many of the world’s preeminent suicide prevention researchers. The videos are browsable by topic, including addiction, children and adolescents, biological factors, coping strategies, genetics, grief and more.
- Tune in at 4pm ET on September 29 for the latest episode of Ask Dr. Jill, featuring AFSP’s Senior Vice President of Research, Dr. Jill Harkavy-Friedman (and her sidekick, Director of Writing and Entertainment Outreach, Brett Wean) who will be taking live questions along with a countdown of the [Top 10 Things We’ve Learned from Research]([link removed]). Watch live on [Mental Health on the Mighty]([link removed]).
- Read our [Research Connection Newsletter]([link removed]) to learn about how AFSP-funded research studies were conducted, what questions we sought answers to, and what was discovered.
- We’ll soon be debuting a new method for sharing findings: the Research Connection Roundup. Each month we’ll highlight four researchers who recently published in academic journals and share a few findings from their studies. Look out for it in your in-box and on our social channels.
- Throughout the month of Rocktober, we’ll also be sharing newly designed research-related infographics, videos and content on our national social media platforms, featuring the latest findings from the top suicide prevention experts in the world.
Thank you to our AFSP community for your support in making our research efforts possible, and enabling us to learn more about suicide so we can help to save more lives in the future.
We encourage you all to tune in, share the above resources, and spread the word!
