I grew up in Manhattan and to be honest, I don’t always feel comfortable in a lot of dominantly queer spaces. There are times when I don’t feel “gay enough” and feel very much like an outsider. My camera helps me bridge that gap: I’m a photographer and often volunteer with The Center to document their events. There’s always an opportunity worth photographing, like the Pride March or a gala celebrating individuals uplifting our community.
I understand the important role photography plays in advancing the mission of The Center, and there are so many great stories to capture. I see myself as a visual historian and I’m so humbled to be able to do something I love. Photography invites people who may sometimes feel like outsiders—people like me—to feel like insiders.
We need places like The Center to help us focus on what matters and what needs our attention. I’m grateful for The Center leveling the playing field in every way possible with the programs and services they provide. With great privilege comes great responsibility, and advocating for the LGBTQ community is a matter of both. Imagine what we can accomplish if we all come together this holiday!
Warmly,
Da
