Growing up as a brown girl in rural South Carolina, I know how easy it is for others to underestimate you. I was told I was too young, too brown, too conservative, and too female. But being told I couldn’t do something made me fight even harder.
I defeated a 30-year incumbent in the South Carolina state legislature. I became the first female and the first minority governor of South Carolina. I served as U.N. ambassador.
There were never lines to the bathroom at any of the jobs I’ve held. But I didn’t let that stop me. I knew if I was successful, that would pave the way for other women like me.
I’m far from the first female to break the mold. Bold women have been forging the path long before us. It’s these women who inspired me to write my new book, “If You Want Something Done…”
Before I served as U.N. ambassador to the U.S., Jeane Kirkpatrick was the first female in the job during the Reagan administration. Women like Margaret Thatcher showed the world the power of female leadership. Civil rights leader Claudette Colvin used the power of her voice at just 15 years of age to change the course of history.
It’s stories like these and so many others that I want to share with you. Stories of people who broke barriers to be at the top of their field, who stood up against unthinkable odds, who spoke out when others stayed silent.
That’s why I wrote my new book, “If You Want Something Done…” and it’s why I am writing to make sure you pre-order your copy today.
This book isn’t like any of the ones I’ve written before. It’s about universal lessons of leadership that transcend time. These are not just stories from our past — these women shaped our present and are continuing to shape our future. Their legacies can inspire all of us to make our mark on the world for the better.
So if you haven’t already, I’m asking you to pre-order a copy today. Whether you pre-order for yourself, a family member, a friend, or a neighbor, I hope you will join me and help get the stories of these incredible women out to the world.
My very best,
