Dear Michigander,

*Exciting news! Last night, we made an unprecedented investment to make college more affordable in Michigan.*

Yesterday, my administration reached a bipartisan deal with the Michigan Legislature on investments to support students pursuing higher education, empower Michigan to compete for huge economic development projects, and increase funding for first responders, among other wins.

This deal is a testament to what we are capable of when we work together. Look out for more information soon about the other wins in the package that will create jobs, protect public safety, and more. Let?s keep putting Michiganders first and moving our state forward.

New! Lowering the Cost of College Tuition

To make college more affordable for families across Michigan, grow Michigan?s talent pool, and get the state closer to achieving its Sixty by 30 [ [link removed] ] goal, the bipartisan bill creates the Michigan Achievement Scholarship.?

Starting with the class of 2023, high school graduates will be eligible for more financial aid from the state, up to:?

* $2,750 if they attend a community college, per year
* $5,500 if they attend a public university, per year
* $4,000 if they attend a private college or university, per year

Students will be eligible if their family demonstrates financial need when they complete the FAFSA. The Michigan Achievement Scholarship will cover:?

* 94% of students attending community colleges
* 76% of students attending a public university
* 79% of students attending a private college or university

ICYMI: Tax-Free Public Service Loan Forgiveness

This week I also announced that student loan relief would not be treated as taxable income in Michigan. Approximately 1.4 million Michiganders eligible for relief will not owe any state taxes for receiving benefits of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program or other student loan forgiveness. This builds on our administration?s actions to make higher education more affordable for Michiganders in every corner of the state.

In Michigan, we value the hard work that all our citizens put in to get the education they need. I will work with anyone to keep lowering the cost of higher education and help students not go into debt in the first place.
