Headwaters Community,
As 2019 closes, I am closing my fourth month in my new role as executive director. I want to share how struck I am by the gifts that 2019 brought me. I have an amazing, talented staff. We get to learn and work alongside some of the fiercest activists and donors around—people like Giving Project alum Sai Chang. Our board of directors focuses on the future of Headwaters and our role in amplifying the power of community to advance equity and justice. None of this is possible without supporters like you—please consider making a gift to support our mission.
As you close your 2019, I hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on what this year has meant to you. It’s true that we can’t always ignore the hard things that happen in our beloved communities. My children ask me to make sense of what they hear in the news or see online. I sometimes struggle to answer them because it’s not easy to explain the inexplicable.
AND I have immense hope for our future. I believe in our youth who fight for climate justice. I am in awe of trans and gender non-confirming people who live out loud and show us that each breath is an act of resistance. I am proud to learn from Black and Indigenous leaders who teach us how to thrive. The biggest gift 2019 brought me is the awareness that we are stronger when we unite around what we fight for—not what we fight against.
Join me in fighting for our future.
In solidarity,
Maria
