As the nation’s first nonprofit investigative news organization, we have a 45-year track record of unearthing original stories that hold people and institutions accountable for the problems they’ve caused or benefited from. When we think about the many pressing issues our country is facing today, there is one that stands out: the coordinated effort to destroy American democracy.

It’s the overarching storyline under which climate change, economic and wealth inequality, racism, reproductive rights, education, health care and so much more will be addressed or exacerbated.

And these coordinated efforts to dismantle our democracy are intensifying. This year, we’ve revealed how anti-democratic forces learned from their failures in 2020. We took you to Michigan to go inside the GOP purge ([link removed]) of seemingly anonymous county election positions and showed how an election-denying extremist became the GOP candidate ([link removed]) for secretary of state. We exposed serious financial irregularities ([link removed]) at one of the leading election-denying nonprofits, uncovering how the Big Lie has become a big grift

We’re preparing new investigations and tools ahead of the November midterms. And we also know how hard it can be to follow stories like this. So we launched a new service to make it easier for you to make sense of it all. Every week, in our newsletter ([link removed]) and on our social platforms ([link removed]) , we’re creating a user’s guide to the threats to democracy.

Journalism is the lifeblood of democracy. That’s something that’s been said for a long time. But today, it’s not just a maxim. It’s a reality. Fierce, unflinching investigative reporting is one of the few ways to confront this existential threat.
