Dear friends,
We just won another round of major victories: Governor Gavin Newsom just signed into law AB 2011!
AB 2011 is the most sweeping housing and land use reform of this legislative session. It allows affordable housing to be built "by-right" in commercially-zoned districts.
Governor Newsom also signed SB 886 to help colleges and universities build more student and faculty housing near their campuses. He also signed AB 2221 to clarify state law to make it easier to build accessory dwelling units.
The bill signings complete a legislative session in which every one of California YIMBY's priority housing bills for the 2021- 2022 legislative session was signed into law. Can you celebrate these historic wins by posting a tweet thanking the governor for signing these bills?Click to tweet »We couldn’t have done it without your help. YIMBYs across the state made thousands of calls and emails to your legislators and to the governor in support of these bills, and it made a difference.
In addition to the three bills he just signed, last week the Governor signed two other bills that California YIMBY prioritized: AB 2097, eliminating many parking minimums across the state, and AB 2873, which seeks to correct historic inequities in our affordable housing contracting and construction workforce.
Finally, the legislature passed SCA 2, co-sponsored by California YIMBY, which will ask voters to repeal Article 34 of the California Constitution with the goal of making it legal to build low-income and public housing in California's cities. This did not need the governor’s signature, and will appear on the ballot in 2024.
These are major victories for our movement and we’re excited to celebrate them with you!
Friends, can you take a moment and celebrate these victories by tweeting your thanks to Governor Newsom?

Gratefully,
Matthew
