President Trump Is Impeached. So What Happens Next?
President Donald Trump became the third U.S. president in history to be impeached last week, but what exactly does that mean moving forward? According to Heritage legal expert John Malcom, not much. “The matter will now move over to the Senate for a trial, expected to begin in early January. The vote to impeach President Trump in the House was as inevitable as his acquittal will be in the Senate. It will require a vote of two-thirds of those senators who are present—67 if all 100 senators vote—to remove Trump from office. Assuming that all 45 Democrats and both independents vote to convict, they will still need at least 20 Republican senators to join them in order to remove Trump from office. This will not happen,” writes Malcolm, who leads Heritage’s Institute for Constitutional Government and is our Ed Gilbertson and Sherry Lindberg Gilbertson senior legal fellow. Trump Notches Wins on Trade and U.S. Military
The U.S. House voted, 385-41, last week to approve the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. While compromises were made in order to pass trade agreement, USMCA is expected to boost the economy and help American businesses. Heritage President Kay C. James writes that “USMCA means freer trade, and freer trade means billions of dollars in new economic activity, new jobs, higher wages, and lower prices for the American people and for our North American neighbors.” Meanwhile, the National Defense Authorization Act finally cleared both houses of Congress. It represents a big step forward in rebuilding our nation’s military strength. “The 2020 NDAA shows that there is a robust bipartisan commitment to a strong national defense,” writes Heritage policy analyst Frederico Bartels. U.K. Conservatives Topple Socialists in Landslide Victory
Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party scored a major victory in the United Kingdom’s general election, ensuring that the country will move forward with Brexit and free itself from the European Union. This election sends a clear message to Britain’s elite that the voice of the people, which has rejected the isolationism and anti-Semitism of the Labour Party, will not be ignored. “The British people voted for Brexit in 2016. They want to be freed of the shackles of the European Union. They want to take back control of their country and they have done so emphatically with this general election result. So I think it was a tremendous result for the British people and it means that Britain will be truly a free nation in just a few weeks’ time,” says Heritage expert Nile Gardiner, director of Heritage's Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom and the Bernard and Barbara Lomas fellow.
