Associated Press: Hurricane Ian’s most damaging winds began hitting Florida’s southwest coast Wednesday, lashing the state with heavy rain and pushing a devastating storm surge after strengthening to the threshold of the most dangerous Category 5 status. Fueled by warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico, Ian grew to a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane overnight with top winds of 155 mph. Gavin Newsom Signs Radical Abortion Legislation
Daily Wire: Among more than a dozen abortion and so-called reproductive health bills California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Tuesday, one piece of legislation has pro-life advocates sick to their stomachs. Assembly bill 2223 would prohibit coroners from holding an inquest after fetal death “related to or following known or suspected self-induced or criminal abortion.” The bill would further clarify under the Reproductive Privacy Act that pregnancy loss — through miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, or perinatal death due to causes that occurred in utero — would not be criminalized ( Daily Wire). Senator Melissa Melendez: With Newsom’s signing of AB2223 if you attempt to abort your baby but it’s born alive, you can now let it die or kill it and no one can investigate the death or hold the woman/person who helped her criminally liable. This is grotesque callousness toward the unborn ( Twitter).

Motion to Rescind Fails, Wisconsin School District to Move Forward with Sex Ed for Kindergartners
They refuse to leave children alone. Fox News: The Wauwatosa School Board met Tuesday to consider a motion to rescind sex ed curriculum passed in August. It teaches medically accurate terms in elementary school as well as lessons on gender identity… Wauwatosa’s new human growth and development curriculum will expect kindergartners to know these body part names: penis, vulva and anus. The committee that created the curriculum says that research shows kids who know the correct names for their genitals are less likely to be sexually abused, are more likely to report sexual abuse if it happens, have a positive body image and have a higher self-esteem ( Fox News). Read the full article to find out what children in higher grades will be forced to learn. Townhall: On “Transgender Day of Visibility” in March, Biden administration agencies released guidance promoting “gender-affirming” care for minors, which Townhall covered. Aside from “social transitioning,” which includes going by a different name and pronouns, “gender-affirming” care includes surgeries and puberty blockers. The agencies that published the guidance claimed “gender-affirming” steps are “reversible” ( Townhall).

As Xi Jinping Looks to Consolidate Power, VP Harris Pledges to Deepen Ties with Taiwan
National Review: The government here holds out hope that the regime in Beijing can be convinced to act rationally to avert conflict. But with the Chinese Communist Party heading into a historic political gathering next month, where Xi Jinping is expected to consolidate power. Xi has steered the Party toward a nationalism resembling that of 19th-century European powers — and their attendant expansionism, said Chiu Chui-cheng, a deputy minister in Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council. This, he added, can be seen in Beijing’s militarization in the South China Sea, its assault on Hong Kong’s democracy, and the brutal campaign in Xinjiang ( National Review). Reuters: U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris condemned on Wednesday “disturbing” actions by China in the Pacific while pledging to deepen “unofficial ties” with Taiwan, days after the U.S. administration pledged its forces would defend the island… China says Taiwan is one of its provinces. It has long vowed to bring Taiwan under its control and has not ruled out the use of force to do so ( Reuters).

Russia Looks to Annex Seized Territory in Ukraine After Vote
Wall Street Journal: Russia was poised Wednesday to formally annex parts of Ukraine where occupied areas held a Kremlin-orchestrated “referendum” on living under Moscow’s rule that the Ukrainian government and the West denounced as illegal and rigged. Armed troops had gone door-to-door with election officials to collect ballots in five days of voting. The suspiciously high margins in favor were widely ridiculed and characterized as a bogus land grab by an increasingly cornered Russian leadership following embarrassing military losses in Ukraine ( Wall Street Journal). Reuters: President Vladimir Putin could proclaim the annexation in a speech within days, just over a week since he endorsed the referendums, ordered a military mobilization at home and threatened to defend Russia with nuclear weapons if necessary ( Reuters).

Associated Press: The U.S. will provide an additional $1.1 billion in aid to Ukraine, with funding for 18 more advanced rocket systems and other weapons to counter drones that Russia has been using against Ukrainian troops, the Biden administration announced Wednesday. The votes were denounced by Kyiv and the West as illegal and rigged ( Associated Press). Daily Mail: Washington is preparing a new round of sanctions against Russia should Moscow annex these areas after the referendum results are announced. President Joe Biden has condemned the referendums and vowed the United States would never recognize the results. The United States has already provided more than $15 billion in military aid to Ukraine for its conflict with Russia ( Daily Mail).

Sen. Joni Ernst on DOD Report: China Is Exploiting U.S. Research Programs, Stealing Technology
Washington Times: Sen. Joni Ernst, Iowa Republican, touted the findings of the study Wednesday, saying the Pentagon’s conclusions should be worrying not just to the defense world, but to every government agency that spends on research China might be interested in… China now finds companies that are receiving federal research funding and recruits those firms to work for institutions associated with its own military operations. The American company then dissolves, and whatever was developed with the U.S. funds is transferred to a subsidiary in China, Ms. Ernst said ( Washington Times). Daily Wire: China has taken numerous steps to infiltrate the U.S. brain trust, at times with unwitting assistance from Americans. More than 100 U.S. universities failed to disclose donations from China, despite requirements. In 2019, Senate Republicans published a detailed investigation of how China used so-called Confucius Institutes within U.S. colleges to cultivate relationships and push government propaganda, while denying the U.S. the ability to do similar on Chinese campuses ( Daily Wire).
