Last Friday, our Mane Event ( [link removed] ) was a night to remember, as friends and supporters joined our first in-person gathering for three years to raise vital funds for lion rescue, care and conservation, as part of our special Year of The Lion ( [link removed] ).

Hosted by our Patrons Dan Richardson and Gaby Roslin at Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking, special guests on the night included world-acclaimed author Sir Michael Morpurgo OBE, lyricist Don Black OBE (who won an Oscar for the song ‘Born Free’), Olympic gold medallist and Patron Sally Gunnell OBE, as well as Catherine Gillson and Glen Vena from our big cat sanctuary in South Africa based at Shamwari Private Game Reserve – who kindly sponsored the event.

Audiences were thrilled by the West End Kids’ spectacular Lion King medley plus their version of ‘Born Free’, TV auctioneer James Lewis hosted a dazzling live auction, and our Executive President Will Travers OBE spoke passionately about our work to protect lions. But the absolute highlight was our very own lioness, Virginia McKenna OBE, who reminded us why we’re part of Born Free’s family.
