Wyoming is abundant with wildlife, and summer is prime time for wildlife viewing in the state. Some head to see wildlife in unique and remote locations, but you don?t always need to take a long hike or spend hours waiting to get a memorable view of animals in the Cowboy State. Sage grouse lek attendance remains steady

Sage grouse lek attendance remains steady according to data from Game and Fish lek counts this spring. In 2022, lek attendance was up slightly at 6% over last year. The appearance of more birds at leks is thought to be due to the natural population cycles of sage grouse combined with good moisture that benefited habitat.

Asian clams confirmed in Glendo Reservoir

Game and Fish has verified the presence of Asian clams, an aquatic invasive species, in Glendo Reservoir. Game and Fish confirmed the discovery in early September. Asian clams have been found in Wyoming before, identified in nearby Guernsey Reservoir in 2019 and the North Platte River in 2014.?

Game and Fish asks public for help with HPAI

Birds in Wyoming are again testing positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza. After a hiatus from confirming any bird deaths from HPAI over the summer, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department?s Wildlife Health Laboratory in Laramie?confirmed two positives this month.?Game and Fish is continuing surveillance of HPAI.

Game and Fish Commission invests more dollars for wildlife crossings

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission met in Buffalo for its September meeting.The Commission once again invested in wildlife crossings to help prevent vehicle collisions with big game, voting to put $500,000 toward the Kemmerer wildlife crossing project on U.S. Highway 189. The project ? consisting of underpasses, an overpass and game fencing ? will help prevent collisions with mule deer and pronghorn and create a safer road for drivers.

Game and Fish, alongside several partners who support conservation, invested over $10.5 million in aquatic and terrestrial habitat projects in 2021. These projects are valuable for conserving and growing populations of more than 800 species in Wyoming. The 2021 Statewide Habitat Plan Annual Report was released recently, highlighting accomplishments throughout the state.
