Dear friends, The disability community needs heroes. Over the past few years, we’ve faced monumental threats, fighting against attacks on Medicaid and the ACA, abuse in institutions, and discriminatory immigration rules. And while nobody with laser vision or claws for hands has swooped in to save us, something just as amazing happened. Time and time again, the disability community has come together to fight battles no one thought we could win, and emerged victorious. Even when threats seem to be on a superhuman scale, we can still fight back through everyday acts — and that gives me hope.
Since I started working at ASAN, I’ve seen people with disabilities band together to defend our rights, face down dangerous foes, and win when the odds were against us. We don’t have to be able to fly or shoot fire from our hands to be heroes. We don’t have to be able to talk, walk, make eye contact, or read legal briefs. Too often, superhero stories are only about one person with incredible powers saving everyone, but those aren’t the heroes I’ve met. Our power is in the way we stand up for ourselves, and the way we take care of each other. The disability community is full of heroes — and we cannot thank you enough for your hard work. As ASAN gears up for the battles ahead, we rely on the heroes in our community to keep our work going. You don’t have to be a billionaire with lots of gadgets and grappling hooks to help out. Everyday heroes like you regularly donate small amounts, volunteer, and/or set up fundraisers for us. It’s thanks to you that we can continue to make the tools necessary to help self-advocates fight for our rights.
