Dear friend,
I have great news to share: A bill was introduced in Congress today to create more oversight of federal prisons. FAMM is supporting this new bill, and we think it can't pass soon enough!
Ask your senators and Delegate Eleanor Norton to support the Federal Prison Oversight Act: [link removed] [[link removed]]
We've shared the horror stories of unsafe, understaffed federal prisons full of corruption and sexual abuse. We shouldn't have to rely on the media to find out what's going on inside federal prisons that cost taxpayers more than $8 billion every year. Lawmakers can’t fix prisons if they don’t even know what the problems are.
If passed, this new oversight bill would require the Inspector General of the Department of Justice to inspect all federal prisons on a rolling basis, report their findings, and monitor whether the Bureau of Prisons makes recommended improvements. The bill would also create an Ombudsman in the Department of Justice to receive and investigate complaints and concerns from people with loved ones in prison. Creating this prison oversight at the federal level will provide a good example to follow for the many states that have no oversight at all.
This new oversight bill has a long road to becoming law, and the first step is getting other members of Congress to become cosponsors. Ask your senators and Delegate Eleanor Norton to cosponsor the Federal Prison Oversight Act today: [link removed] [[link removed]]
Thank you for supporting prison oversight in every prison system!
Best,
