 A few months ago, we emailed you about the Israeli government’s targeted killing of American Journalist Shireen Abu-Akleh. 

During a trip to Israel in the aftermath of Shireen’s killing, President Biden mispronounced her name and emphasized the US alliance with Isreal. In response to the lack of action, some Democrats are now calling for an FBI investigation into her killing. 

Now, the longest-serving member of the US Senate, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), is threatening aid to Israel if there is not an unbiased investigation of Shireen’s death.

In his statement, the Senator calls for the Leahy Law to be applied if there is no independent investigation. Named after the Senator, the Leahy Law is a US human rights law prohibiting the US Department of State and Defense from providing military assistance to countries that violate human rights. 

Senator Leahy’s threat to invoke the Leahy law is the right thing to do. The US should play no role whatsoever in funding countries that intentionally kill American journalists. 

But Senator Leahy shouldn’t be the only Senator calling for the law to be applied- we must pressure those who signed onto the leader for an FBI investigation to back the calls for the Leahy law to be applied. Members of the House Progressive Caucus should be standing behind Senator Leahy during this time, but since the release of his statement, it's crickets from Congress’s ‘progressive’ left-most faction.
