Corruption Alert: We already know the predatory lending industry bought access to the Trump administration -- but they may have actually bought an actual change in policy, too.
Executives from the payday loan industry were recently caught on tape bragging that the millions of dollars they raised for Donald Trump’s reelection campaign got them the ears of people within his administration.
On that tape, Mike Hodges, the CEO of payday lender Advance Financial, suggested that the White House gave him private assurances that they support taking away even more consumer protections against the payday loan trap than what they’ve publicly proposed.
The executive suggested the administration is on board with getting rid of the protection that limits the amount of automatic withdrawal attempts a lender can make on a borrower’s bank account. Without it, consumers could be socked with more and more overdraft fees.
Now the spotlight is on CFPB Director Kraninger who faces a choice. Will she give a predatory lender and major Trump donors what they asked for -- a further erosion of payday protections? Or will Kraninger demonstrate independence for once and do right by consumers by saying "No, we’ve done your industry enough favors."
We're not holding our breath considering one of Kraninger’s first major actions as director was proposing to kill one of the strongest protections against the payday loan debt trap.
Add your name to our URGENT petition. Tell Director Kraninger to make the right choice and side with consumers.
