MISSING — PRESUMED EXTINCT!
John — Meet the beautiful baiji, a freshwater dolphin native to the Yangtze river system in China.
Tragically, pictures like this are almost certainly the only way you can now see the baiji, as it is now likely extinct. Scientists and environmentalists believe it is the first dolphin species made extinct due to the impact of humans.
Known as the ‘Goddess of the Yangtze’ for its rarity and beauty, local fishermen considered the baiji a good fortune and protection provider.
But, as China industrialized and heavily used the Yangtze river system for fishing, transportation, and hydroelectricity, the baiji population declined significantly over the decades.
The last sighting of the baiji in 1997 occurred when scientific exploration found just 13 of these stunning cetaceans. Twenty-five years later, the Chinese government and scientists believe the baiji is functionally extinct.
John, the loss of the ‘Goddess of the Yangtze’ is a supreme tragedy. It should not have happened. But unchecked human activity and overfishing pushed this beautiful species into extinction.
Preserving at-risk species is — and must continue to be — a priority of our legislative agenda. Knowing we can now only appreciate the beauty of the baiji through images is heartbreaking. That’s why the work of our SEEC members is critical.
Thank you for stepping up.
